What are Lattices?

3D-printed lattices are repeated patterns comprised of a network of cells, beams, and nodes. These 3D-printed micro-architectures unlock entirely new designs that have been considered before unmakeable. This allows using only one material with a whole range of different mechanical properties by finetuning the combination of lattice characteristics leading to higher comfort, better rebound, aeration, and reduced weight.

Benefits at a Glance

  • Increased comfort
  • Better rebound
  • Cushioning
  • Aeration
  • Weight reduction

Lattice Characteristics

  • Lattice type
  • Cell size
  • Beam diameter
  • Aspect ratio

Lattices meets Engineering

There are millions of different lattice options to choose from. This can easily become overwhelming. But not all lattices make sense to use for any given application. This is why BASF Forward AM developed a lattice library to understand the different mechanical performances of different lattice types (see picture). We then incorporate the know-how into a touch&feel version of our Ultrasim® 3D Lattice Test Pads to experience the wide range of properties lattices can achieve.

Stress-strain behavior of different lattices showing what lattice type to use for what application.

Ultrasim® 3D Lattice Engine builds up on the lattice expertise and combines Hyperganic algorithmic engineering with BASF Ultrasim® 3D Lattice Library. This way users can choose from BASF validated lattices and generate lattice parts instantly. Our validated lattices are based on years of experience backed up with sophisticated material models and QC process to ensure printability and depowderability.

Benefits at a Glance

  • User friendly
  • Access for free
  • Validated BASF lattices
  • Based on lattice library
  • System integration with BASF material and services
