What is a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)?

A Life Cycle Assessment is a study that calculates the environmental impact of a product along the value chain. This means a detailed report of every input (e.g. material, energy, consumables, etc.) and output (e.g. waste), that are being used and produced over a product’s life span. These data are gathered across the product’s industry value chain and later cumulated into an emission score. The environmental score can be calculated for a single stage (e.g. Material Production) or several stages (e.g. from Material Production to End-of-Life). The Life Cycle Assessments created by BASF Forward AM focuses on providing emission scores on two stages (1) Raw Material Production and (2) 3D Printing Manufacturing. All LCAs follow the PEF methodology EF 3.0 in line with the ISO Standard 14040 : 2006 and ISO 14044 : 2006 methodology.

Ultrasim® 3D Sustainability Analysis (LCA) Offering

3D printing can help to reduce the overall environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable environment. We at Forward AM want to provide as much transparency as possible to fully understand the challenges and potentials. We are working on creating Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) for our products and help you to understand the environmental footprint for a 3D printed part. For this we offer 3 different options to support:
